Hand Surgery

Video thumbnail

Many times, it is beneficial to have surgery performed with the patient under sedation and local anesthesia. This technique allows the surgeon to ensure that the operation has been performed adequately so the patient can expect a normal outcome after surgery and therapy.

This is a 34-year-old female who, while cutting food, cut the tendon in her left index finger. This tendon was responsible for bending the finger toward the palm and making a complete fist. Unfortunately, with a damaged tendon, the risk of complications after surgery was high. When the procedure can be performed with the patient awake, it gives us a good idea of whether the repair has been completed adequately for postoperative functional use of the hand.

This patient underwent repair of the tendon on the palmar side of her index finger. The patient had a good outcome and was happy with the function and abilities of her hand.
